iphone

ok, so petrov is a technology whore. so? well today the iphone goes on sale to the masses. and we certainly do mean mass(es). petrov is all for new fangled technologies, but he remains unconvinced of the whole camping out bit that numerous individuals have taken to since monday. this man pictured to the left little friends, is the first person to get in line anywhere to purchase an iphone. who still wants an iphone so they can be just like this guy?

petov has decided to wait for the second generation iphone for three primary reasons:
1) the internet service on the iphone makes fencepost racing sound like nascar (its slower than dialup... prepare to wait 2full minutes for the yahoo homepage to download).
2) 4/8gb harddrive... really? petrov will keep his 30gb ipod.
3)the headphone jack... apparently the iphone requires an adapter to use your own earphones. are you kidding? the thing is meant to play music and you have to have an adapter? we all know that adapters sticking high and dry out of a gadget is just asking for trouble.

therefore petrov believes its best to wait for iphone2.0 or the new touchscreen ipods built on OSX.

rainin' in paradize

be ready to be offended (a little bit). petrov is still not a huge manu chao fan. after seeing them with thievery corporation, petrov was able to dance, but the music lacked that something special for him. anyway, petrov knows there are several regular readers out there who "i heart manu chao" so here is his latest video/song.

everyone's favorite indie-church choir (and possible cult)

flight of the conchords

Petrov has decided that paying the cable company $95/month is enough, so he therefore does not get HBO. However, a large black man in chinatown was kind enough to provide Petrov with a dvd of the pilot for Flight of the Conchords and then offered to take his picture, which petrov declined politely. Petrov was unsure of what this was meant to accomplish as petrov has not seen the show, so he wouldn't know what to say with the camera rolling.

anyway... petrov watched the pilot tonight. he was pleasantly surprised to discover that the show was actually quite funny. funny in that stupid indie/foreign way, not '40 year old virgin' way. petrov supposes the best way of describing the show is a kiwi musical version of the office. (Note: kiwi = 'new zealander'... for those not international inclined) its basically like the office, except its about this two-man band and every once in awhile the guys break out in song, while the world around them continues as if they are not singing. the best part... they aren't bad singers.

here is one of the song outbreaks....

smoosh

when two pre-teens can rock as good as you, you should be a little concerned. but that is in fact what Smoosh does. petrov had heard of them, but had little knowledge of them until he saw them open for The Pipettes at blackcat a while back. he was indeed found to following standard DC indie concert protocol for bands one likes -- tapping foot, nodding head, and the optional a) arms folded or b) beer in hand. petrov was guzzling his beer bottle like a bunny on his mum's teet, so yeah petrov approves of smoosh.

at the SF performance they covered the bloc party song "this modern love" and did quite well in petrov's view. despite not being grown men who can actually rock and not make DAR Constitution Hall's, where petrov saw bloc party, acoustics sound as bad as they are, smoosh gives a good playing of the song. they were unable to make it their own, but like a fine cheese, age will cure that.

the make out

so you are going to a concert/show with your significant other to enjoy some fine tunes. awesome! in fact that is among the top requirements in petrov's book for finding a significant other. but my little friends, there are strict limits. a kiss lasting for less than 3 seconds a maximum of once per hour is about all anyone wants to see when forced to stand too incredibly close to you during a sold out concert. nobody needs to know the song that just started is significant to your relationship via you putting your tongue down someone's throat for the entire song.

of the last four concerts petrov has attended he has been forced to watch people make out in front of him. the most recent was saturday evening at the Thievery Corp/Manu Chao concert. some girl in what appeared to be dirty fake jean material shorts that were equivalent to no more than a square-cut speedo in size decided to spend a significant amount of time making out with her boy. bless her heart for finding a man, but petrov neither wants watch that shite while trying to look over her to see the main act, the band, nor does petrov want to watch her boyfriend grab her dirty fake jean shorts that showed off way too much ass.

well, if you were offended by this blog entry guess what? you should probably a) watch the video below and b) go here to see other things you shouldn't do at a concert.

daft punk simplified

so Petrov already gave his short "speel" on daft punk, but he felt this video was pretty sweet. this is what makes youtube so great.

a martini and a chill out session

ugh, petrov is sure IMP doesn't sell martinis. does this call for a flask and a compacting martini glass? it should, but petrov will make do with the cheap beer on tap as he enjoys the smooth samba's of bebel gilberto, thievery corporation, and manu chao and a pleathera of 18th St Lounge artists at Merriweather Pavilion tomorrow evening.

petrov has long enjoyed thievery corporation and bebel & family (daddy is Joao Gilberto and mommy is Miucha -- who are all buddy buddy with Stan Getz). You probably know Thievery Corporation from the Garden State soundtrack's "Lebanese Blonde", Manu Chao from the single "Me Gustas Tu", and Bebel & co.'s "Girl from Impanema." However, they all have deep histories and some amazing beats that have not made it mainstream, which is all good because there isn't much better than Thievery Corp playing to the hometown crowd at 9:30 club, which already can sell out 4 nights in a row, right before christmas, in a city that basically shuts down for the holiday.

daft punk is playing at my house.....

petrov first heard daft punk back in the late 90s on mtv2 (when it was just crazy music). now like 10 years later, they are rocking like no others. petrov is waiting to see daft punk in concert it looks amazing....

the go! team

ok, this video is a bit too humorous for petrov not to post. The Go! Teams next album will be out in September and the first single in July. petrov will be waiting.....

20.6.07

recycle your pop (songs)

in lines with the fergalicious post.... the new Nelly Furtado video... have we seen it before? Yes. Is it better than the original? Petrov sees a scantily clad wet man in the original, nothing in the new...so No. FYI, Shania is a Petrov guilty guilty pleasure, but she rides snowmbiles, so he is ok with that. To be fair to Nelly, she at least mixed it up with some ideas from other Shania videos.

AFTER

polyphonic spree

in a little over a week Petrov will be seeing Polyphonic Spree at the 9:30 Club with some crazy U2 fanatic. Furthermore, the first single off the new PS album is a series of like 70,000 still shots and is taken in DC (notice large marble phallic symbols in background). As such, it would probably be wise for Petrov to play a PS song for all the kiddies who don't know the band small cult that plays happy happy joyous songs. To be honest Petrov doesn't actually know that much about the band, he just has this odd desire to go to concerts that seem appropriate for dancing. If this tune turns your crank, AOL Spinner is streaming the entire album on their website for the week, Petrov believes.

off to canada

in case you are one stick short of a bundle, you probably figured out Petrov is either a) a damn canuck or b) from northern NY. Petrov is of the later variety, but basically the forementioned. Petrov is on vacation until Tuesday, so blog entries have decreased, for which he apologizes (Mr and Mrs Petrov still don't have high speed internet, despite trying to convince the cable company come that far out in the country).

tomorrow, weather permitting, petrov is off on the boat to explore the canadian waters of the st. lawrence and perhaps stay over for the night in canada.

So Petrove decided to give you kiddies a little taste of what the US music scene would be lacking without these canadian bands. (duely noted Ms Maple Queen, the artist formely known as Feist is a canuck).

Most prominent for you little hipsters is arcade fire. Others include hidden cameras (petrov's favorite band), final fantasy, broken social scene, metric, new pornographers, and hot hot heat. also there is always the lovely david usher, which american kiddies don't know because his stuff is only released in canada.

youtube sucks

just kidding. petrov loves youtube. since he started this blog he didn't realize the extent of the massive amounts of video on there. the only complaint is the extremely crappy quality of video, but petrov guesses that is a price to pay for commercial free video. quality is one reason he chooses imeem over youtube when possible.

youtube just updated their website interface (more of a tweak than what petrov would call update, but who am i to judge). but how would you improve the youtube interface?

well petrov believes the (still) ugly interface has to be the first thing to go... what's that you say? its gone? well indeed it is, just check out chime.tv . it has all the wonders of youtube, metacafe, and google video and a joost-like interface.

well, what kind of blog host would petrov be if he didn't give a good music video to test out chime.tv? check the link above and head over to see Bloc Party - The Prayer.

amy winehouse.....whaaaa???

foo, you already know her, but do you know her band? you do? damn, your good! for the rest of us hosers, like petrov, its The Budos Band. If you have been to an asian bar in the past two years, like petrov does on occasion, we all know and love the combination of anime with some heavy beats that make you wanna dance. Well, The Budos Band, stuck with good old American animation with a bunch of coal miners in their recent video for "Volcano Song" and as you guessed it, its a song that makes you wanna get down just a little bit.

come on, give petrov a break, you know "danceable music" is very subjective. Unlike those silly animes, the video pulls off the theme of the song, but keeps it not to choreographed, which is what makes anime at clubs so good.... petrov dunno how come it works that way, but it just does.

all things texan aren't bad

eh, petrov is a liberal northern who prefers snow to heat, so deal with it. so tonight the Austin, TX band, Voxtrot, is gracing the stage of the blackcat, meanwhile several blocks away, my maple syrup loving canadian sweetheart Feist is taking the 9.30 club stage. unfortunately, its a busy school night for petrov so he will be unable to attend either.

the Maple Syrup Princess, already graced a blog entry here a few days ago, so today Petrov is providing one of the slower songs off Voxtrot's first full length album. Petrov had some difficulty picking a song to share with you all because he has pretty much only consumed this album as a single unit, as it is a very digestible carrot album. Petrov just starts listening and next thing he knows its over and when its over it makes petrov very sad. So here is to the the "repeart all button."

architecture in helsinki

Petrov decided awhile ago to put a song called "Heart it Races" by Architecture in Helsinki on the blog for your aural-satisfaction. However, he has been tripped up with which song to actually place on here, because you see, the song has already been remixed by the likes of DJRupture, Hey Willpower!, Dr Dog, Trizzy, and Yacht. So instead Petrov has come to the decision to give you the whole enslaught, plus AiH's video for the song. Petrov is sort of partial to the original and Dr Dog's remix, but he would appreciate hearing back from you on which version is your favorite. Comment away!

fyi, the video makes Petrov smile a little.

ga-ga for ra-ra

what a cliche blog entry title! its made up for in substance though.

Normally Petrov simply informs you kiddies of new/different music, but today is an exception.

what would motivate Petrov to do such a ridiculous thing? Petrov recently had the opportunity to sit down for a fireside chat with the ra-ra rasputin singer, Rozz.

Today Petrov recommends going to see Ra-Ra Rasputin at Wonderland (and not just because Petrov is the white rabbit). Petrov would provide a sample of this funky little band, but alas their music has yet to be graced in 1s and 0s (digitized in case your not keeping up). So why the hell would you want to go to this show then? Let Pretrov set it straight and simple:
1) Petrov has fine musical tastes
2) they sound like the Fall, Talking Heads, New order, Belle & Sebastian, The Rapture, etc... (you will want to dance)
3) Petrov will drink beer with you
4) its at Wonderland, what isn’t there to love about that?
5) its free (more $$$ for #3)

9.6.07

fergalicious...

....makes petrov vomit a little in his mouth. but he has learned to deal suitably with it as it is his only option when patronizing certain bars that he enjoys. well, granted petrov did not like the song before, but he has come to realize that not only is fergie a #$%^@, she also rips off other's music to make her vomit, i mean music. could someone please sue her?

here is a JJ Fed's "supersonic," please let petrov know if u have heard anything similar before. if you have petrov promises that fergie ferg will love you long time.

8.6.07

feist likes maple syrup

well, petrov has always enjoyed the musical talents of feist. but if you watch her Spinner interview here, you will see she loves maple syrup and wants to go out and tap a tree herself. move over shania, petrov is in love with his new canadian girlfriend, feist, now.

take it like a man

in honor of Pride weekend here in DC, what better song than "take it like a man" by Dragonette to get ready for a night on the town? the song is very catchy and the video... well the video is straight out of the 70s. Martina Sorbara and her cherry necklace makes Petrov a little weak in the knees. "but who is martina?", you ask Petrov. well martina is a fine young lady we have all heard before on the Basement Jaxx album "Crazy Itch Radio." (she sings 'take me back to your house'). anywho, happy pride!

technical notes

Petrov radio is now available at the bottom of this page, with a streaming playlist of all songs from CYHfSN. petrov has not figured out how to put it somewhere more suitable on the page so for now it shall remain neglected down there.

further... damn youtube has a lot of stuff on it. until petrov began this blog, he didn't realize most songs have music videos on there and if they don't, there is some monkey attempting to sing to it.

also, petrov has added a running list of interesting blog entries from across the net called "from other blogs." you can subscribe to it on the rss icon to the left.

after some work, petrov was able to convert CYHfSN into a 3 column page, which took a lot more work than had been expected (or should be necessry).

what has been learned today?
petrov needs html and web2.0 lessons.

5.6.07

the canadian broadcasting corporation

Apparently its too much to ask for CBC from any cable or satellite provider in the States with the exception of along the border. Did you know you can get an Indonesian tv channel, but not a Canadian one?? Somehow I find it hard to believe there are more Indonesians in the US than there are Canadians. NBC's coverage of hockey is pathetic, but they have insured they have the rights to all things Stanley Cup, so I have been denied the allowance of at least watching HNiC online.

Oh well, apparently FoxReality does receive a large enough audience to make it into my cable bill though.

4.6.07

what will you do when you win Lord Stanley's cup?

So the appropriate answer on tv for major sporting events is always "I'm going to Disneyland!" or some crap like that. At the current rate, Anneheim will be answering that question... but will they go to Disneyland, when they are right there? I hope they at least go to Disneyworld instead. Ottawa is down 3-1 in the Stanley Cup final and Petrov is none too pleased.

Disneyland.... in coming upon Petrov's new boyfriends, scratch that, new band find (Datarock), Petrov discovered a "Fa Fa Fa" remix by a band called Shakes. These young laddies also hale from the land where people eat corgies to protest animal cruelty... go figure. Petrov has enjoyed this song of theirs called Disneyland Prt. 1, probably a bit too much since Petrov discovered it, but he enjoys the mixture of rock/punk/dance/etc... the song brings together. Anway, it is long past Petrov's bedtime, so here is the video, and he suggests you turn your speakers up and dance one for that poor corgi killed in the name of ending animal cruelty.

fa fa fa fa.... oooo la la

well well well.... what do we have hear? well these two fine gentlemen, better known as Datarock, have accomplished the tag team that makes Petrov love them. 1) a sweet sound (of course) and 2) sometimes equally importantly... the looks. Detective Petrov is depressed to see a ring on that damn ring finger. Oh well... its not like Petrov was going to get a triple slam with a (1) hot, (2) indie rocking man with a (3) british accent.

Petrov only discovered Datarock this past weekend and his info on the band is limited to the Fa-Fa-Fa EP and two other random songs. Be sure that Petrov will be further inspecting the full length 2007 self-titled album very soon for some more catchy beats. But for now Petrov leaves you with, you guessed it, "Fa Fa Fa" track from their latest EP.

2.6.07

from bloc party to poutine.... i digress

Though Bloc Party party tickets are on the high end of Petrov's allowance for concerts, he is looking forward to it. This will also be Petrov's first visit to DAR, which is notorious for awful acoustics. Petrov has turned down past concerts at DAR due to this reputation, but has decided its time to give it a chance. Much like Petrov's first experience on a metrobus yesterday. Thankfully, they did not make rabbit roadkill out of Petrov, and for that alone he is happy.

If you don't already know Bloc Party, you should go inspect their music more thoroughly. First up is a Bloc Party video contest winner, which is quite elaborate for an amateur.

Second up is something for those of you who like coldplay, who Petrov knows are out there. Petrov saw coldplay way back in the day. unfortunately, Petrov chose to eat poutine several hours earlier, which ended up making him ill and in turn (not knowingly) taking pepto bismol without enough water making the people around Petrov on the concert floor think Petrov was coming down from some powerful drugs. This is a well put together mix of the instrumental of some coldplay song and the vocals from Bloc Party's "Hunting for Witches." Enjoy.

1.6.07

girls make petrov dance

well petrov has promised new music... but unfortunately week 1 of Clap Your Hands for Something New is a very busy concert week for Petrov. As such, I feel the necessity to share some songs about these concerts for those of you who don't know these bands already.

Tonight Petrov will surely be dancing to The Pipettes. what is greater than some cute indie girls dressed up and dancing on stage like they are 60s divas? Petrov is unsure of how he feels about the whole cd "We are the Pipettes," but several songs certainly are fun and I feel like seeing The Pipettes live will inspire Petrov to bust some hot 60s dance moves.

Well, what Petrov would like to show you is a video of the song "Pull Shapes," but such is not available so here is "Your Kisses are Wasted on Me." The previous paragraph will be fully understood in watching this video.

You may now close your door and start dancing with "Pull Shapes."
